On Tuesday the Canucks players and organization welcomed back an old friend and teammate Roberto Luongo when he was back as a member of the Florida Panthers before he got to practice in the building on the ice where he played for so many years. This is Luongo’s 1st game back in Vancouver since the trade last season although he did play against the Canucks at the end of last season in Florida. Twitter blew up on Tuesday much like it did when Ryan Kesler had his press conference when he finally returned but Luu being a more popular player there was way more attention.
When asked how the fans in Vancouver would react to him returning he said “Luus and Boos they all sound the same”. I for one will be Luuuuuu’ing all night during the game, and when Im cheering in the stands on Sunday when the Panthers are in Edmonton I’ll continue to show my support and Luuuu like we all did when he was a Canuck.
Several people think he was trolling when he was talking about the Heritage Classic and not playing in it when he said “There’s no hiding it. I did want to play that game,” Luongo told reporters Tuesday. “I mean that goes without saying, and if I would have played I probably would maybe still be here. Who knows?” but clearly that had a lot to do with the deal coming together so quickly after that event.
Wednesday morning several Canucks players shared their thoughts on his return and their favourite moments with him.
“The fans love him and I hope they give him the reception he deserves” – Henrik Sedin
“Game 5 against Anaheim, in Anaheim, going into the second OT…” – Burrows fav memory of Luongo (Bathroom Break)
“My favourite memories are beating him at cards and how mad he’d always get” – Bieksa
I just hope Roberto Luongo gets what he truly deserves on Thursday night and that’s a standing ovation and some Luuuuuu chants even though he will be wearing another jersey and trying to help another team win. He will forever be a Canuck!
