First off I’d like to congratulate Roberto Luongo for moving into 5th all time in career saves passing John Vanbiesbrouck who had 22,197. Luu is just about 6500 saves away from passing , but that’s with Brodeur playing almost 30,000 more minutes in the 444 games he has on Luongo.
It’s nice to finally see Luu getting well deserved starts in net and playing in meaningful games once again, he has playing great to start the season with a .927 save percentage and a 2.24 GAA with a 5-3-4 record. If the Panthers offence can stay consistent throughout the season, I don’t see reason why Florida couldn’t make the playoffs and challenge the teams in the East throughout them with Roberto carrying them.
Backing up Luongo this season is Al Montoya who came over from the Winnipeg Jets and has done a pretty decent job at that. Luu has been serving as a mentor to many goalies over his career, most recently Cory Schneider and Eddie Lack. Schneider has taken over the job from Brodeur and basically pushed him out of the league but without the help and mentorship of Roberto he wouldn’t be where he is at right now in the league. Eddie Lack proved to have a pretty good season backing up Luongo last year in Vancouver and was a great 1-2 punch, until the Heritage Classic… Wonder how things would have worked out if Tortorella wasn’t the coach?
Id also like to say that I love the masks that Luu is using this season, have always loved them. From the Pink Panther helmet he used when he was 1st in Florida, to the Johnny Canucks helmet in Vancouver. These new ones have great color coordination with the Panthers jerseys and very simple yet stands out very well and represents Florida and the Panthers great.
All of us fans will miss Roberto Luongo and what he brought to our Vancouver Canucks, but we’re all just glad he is finally getting playing time as a starter and being able to one day soon achieve his and every other NHL players goal of winning the Stanley Cup. LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU !!!
